Merc Man Inner circle Nuneaton, Warwickshire 2602 Posts | Tommy Wonders 2 Cup Routine: Seen a number of these 2 cup routines over the years and, to be brutally honest, I can never understand the logic of them standing alone. Let me explain. Why perform with just two cups, when you can work with just the two integrated within a three cup routine? That said, I think that the Chop Cup takes some beating if you are looking to perform a cup and ball routine in today's world. And, even whilst I appreciate that the three cup routines of some (Ricky Jay to name just one) are entertaining, they can also be confusing and/or boring in the hands of many others. And I think that's the problem of a 2 cup routine - there's no phase within that I've ever seen that really grabs the attention. For example, if the ball vanishes from one cup, then it doesn't really need much logic to know where it's going to appear, does it? I don't really know how many performers could make it work - certainly not the versions I've seen over the years at conventions. As for this actual product. I think it was given particularly low scoring unfairly; yes it may have been released elsewhere - but this is a stand alone instructional DVD for those wishing to learn just this one trick of Tommy's - so therefore, if it does the biz by teaching you how to perform the routine, then it's achieved its goal perhaps? And possibly, it's a more cost-effective solution than buying the box set if the other routines aren't required. I also certainly wouldn't mark it down on the production quality. It is what it is - footage that's probably around 20 years old. Not something however that I'd ever consider learning - purely because as I said, it's neither really one thing or the other. Plus, I don't think any two cup routine would get a better reaction than Ken Brooke's Chop Cup routine that I've used for 30+ years. Cognition: I think that the idea is pretty creative; particularly for the younger guys who could get away with wearing one. Sadly, the design of the t-shirt lacks one essential thing - visibility. And with visibility sadly lacking, you are prone to failure - as highlighted in the live performance clip. Method-wise, people may get the modus operandi in Christmas crackers, but in reality, do people really bother to read it? More than likely, the cards and instructions are thrown away with the turkey bones after dinner. So, I think that the trick itself is a worker, with the right presentation - and that this idea of having it printed on a t-shirt is basically quite good. The 'one out' principle also gives it a good kicker - it's become standard fayre in a few tricks but the entertainment value of it remains sound. However, it's the design in my view that majorly lets this product down - particularly as the design on most printed t-shirts tends to fade after washing. Concealment: Quite a nice-looking utility gimmick - albeit Mark Leveridge has been producing a similar item since around 1978. So I'm not quite sure what is new here design-wise - suffice to say that it's good to see that you get ten gimmicks to play with. I just wonder whether there are a couple of ungaffed envelopes also supplied - or whether these are easily obtainable? Fair enough, you get the PDF's for making them up - albeit that's a Paper Crane/Sans Minds issue that we could all probably do without. The first thing I'd use this for is for a trick I've done for years requiring two double-facers and a Himber wallet. Basically, much cleaner, as you can use your everyday wallet with the envelope inside and get them to remove the envelope for the final reveal. So this looks a very good product - and there seems to be a lot of useful ideas contained upon the DVD - albeit you'd only probably want to perform a maximum of two effects per performance. Tarbell: What can I say? The first WPR of the year and possibly the greatest investment that we are going to see in 2015. Would be nice to see the layout of the book guys - any chance next week? Also, is it the complete Vols 1-8 with the index in Vol 7, and does it contain the Tarbell Scrapbook Notes that were released in 1993? A good opening show and thanks for your time. mkarav Regular user Westwood, NJ 103 Posts | I believe a similar method is employed in the 'Ramos Same Card Trick as presented by Dai Vernon in the Shinx (50 years of Great Magic from the Shinx' by Christopher Melbourne). You deal four poker hands as a prelude (or alternatively stack the deck and false shuffle and deal supposedly indifferent cards) and then ask someone to think of any card in the deck. You ask the spec if he sees his card in any of the other poker hands. The hands the spec sees his card gives you enough info to divine the card. The secret is the specific cards in each hand allow you via binary coding to deduce the value and suit of the card (1st hand is '1', 2nd hand is '2', 3rd hand is '4' and last hand is '8'), adding the values gives you the value of the chosen card. I assume the same method is used in cognition although quite different presentation. |
johnstu Regular user London 160 Posts | Merc Man, it sounds like you've never seen Tommy Wonder's 2 cup routine. You owe it to yourself to watch it, even if a 2 cup routine isn't for you, you can just to marvel at his mastery of misdirection. It's on YouTube here: Tommy Wonder 2 Cup routine This is the performance that was praised in the review, as you will no doubt recognise from the usual L and L spectators. |
C.J.Magic New user 69 Posts | Here's Tommy's routine: Max Maven said it crushed magicians at a 4F conventionin the late 70's. Everyone was used to the Vernon routine and so it fried them. I think it's an intellectual routine better suited for parlor type shows in intimate surroundings. But, if I wanted to crush laymen, then a more traditional set with incongruent final loads would be preferred. I still prefer Al Wheatley's chop chop cup. It has that special ingredient of getting the audience involved in a guessing game instead of just observing. Don Alan's remarkable routine ( those reactions are legit ) |
Merc Man Inner circle Nuneaton, Warwickshire 2602 Posts | Thanks for posting both clips C.J. Johnstu - Whilst I thought the Tommy Wonder routine was very good from a magicians perspective, there were phases where I got totally confused at first watching. Like a lot of multi-cup routines, it just went on far too long in my honest opinion. Excellent however for learning about timing and misdirection - so I can see why it's been released if these points are covered in depth on the DVD, and its subsequent usefulness. Don Alan's Chop Cup routine is quick and to the point; and easy enough for spectators to follow without being confusing. If you want to look at another version, check out Doug Henning's handling (this is Ken Brooke's routine, whom Doug learnt it from) - starts at 1:40 - https://youtube.com/watch?v=06O46DjlvzQ If spectators watched all routines, and you asked them to describe the effects at the end of the night, they would possibly get the same response - 'well he made balls vanish and appear under a little cup'. So whilst I appreciate Tommy Wonder's routine purely from a magicians perspective; I personally don't think it is better than either chop cup routine. I really believe that this is a prime example of 'less being more'. Barry Allen Joe Riding (20th May 1932 - 23rd April 2005) R.I.P. mate. Thank you for making me an entertainer. I miss you. |
Bill Hegbli Eternal Order Fort Wayne, Indiana 22143 Posts | As a long time advocate of the Ken Brooke philosophy I agree with Ken Brooke and most professional Close-up Trade Show magicians. The Chop Cup meets the demands of modern day audiences. Trying to hold their attention, when their attention span is only 10 seconds, the Chop Cup is the tool of choice. In the Unique Year book containing Ken Brookes 1st Chop Cup routine, he tells of giving up the Cups and Balls for the Chop Cup, because is it superior as a performance piece. Back in the late 1960's and early 1970's, Larry Jennings published his One Cup Cups and Ball routine, and then later published his Chop Cup Routine. If anyone would search out these excellent routines, as I am guessing Ken Brooke did, they should see the potential of the material fits well with the Chop Cup. Comparing Larry Jennings material to the Ken Brooke Chop Cup Routine he published, it is evident that Ken Brooke merged the Jennings material with the original Chop Cup instructions. Creating a longer more magical and entertaining fast paced performance piece. Again, real entertainer's knowing what will work for lay audiences. Don Alan's routine is structured from the original instructions that came with the Chop Chop - Chop Cup instructions marketed here in the U.S. by Martin Magic. I have an original Martin Aluminum Chop Cup as used for many years by Don Alan. After thousands of performances, Don Alan honed the original routine and make it his own, then with is wit and humor, made it famous beyond any close-up magic trick to date. Chop Chop's original cup was made from thick bamboo stalks, simply cutting a stalk of bamboo. I have no idea who made then changed it to an aluminum cup. I heard it implied Chop Chop may have been the one to market in that that form, but I actually have no idea. Don Alan in that video is using what was called the Master Chop Cup, made by the now defunct company, Morrissey Magic. Morrissey Magic made a shorter cup, Don Alan said he switch to the shorter cup because it fit mouth down in his brief case, thus taking up less room. Don Alan is missed very much by many, including myself. Tommy Wonder's routine with his two cups is a fine routine, but as Merc Man states is it confusing a little. From the tapes I seen of Tommy Wonder, he was not a talker and did not use a lot of patter. Maybe one day a Don Alan type will turn his routine into an entertaining piece for lay audiences, lets hope so. After David Penn's comments, I would not bother to purchase this new DVD that has little to nothing to offer. I am sure Tommy Wonder collector's will grab it up, to see Tommy in a more casual setting teaching this trick to the guy marketing it. Personally, I could give a ****, about video quality. I don't buy magic DVDs to watch as a movie for entertainment. It is the content, and if anything different or new is expressed, is all that interest me. Such information that would raise my performance and routine to another level. Vietnam Veteran 1967, Sgt. sirbrad Inner circle 2001 Posts | I was expecting Sean to lift up the front of his shirt and have it say 'I am always off by 5.' Or turn around and have the back say 'I suck' or something like that lol. The great trouble with magicians is the fact that they believe when they have bought a certain trick or piece of apparatus, and know the method or procedure, that they are full-fledged mystifiers. -- Harry Houdini |
ixnay66 Inner circle Denver 1479 Posts | I used to do David Williamson's cups and ball routine and it was only 2 cups. I thought it was fantastic. I did find it amusing when a previous poster said 'Why perform with just two cups, when you can work with just the two integrated within a three cup routine?' With that logic, you could just as easily say 'Why perform with just THREE cups, when you can work with just the three integrated within a FOUR cup routine?' |
